A 4-year-old boy is dead and a 16-year-old is recovering after the ATV they were riding flipped and crashed, Georgia deputies said.

Authorities got the call around 7:45 p.m. Sunday, May 18, about a wreck involving an ATV in Cumming, according to the Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office.

Investigators learned a 16-year-old was driving the off-road vehicle with a 4-year-old passenger, the sheriff’s office said in a May 19 news release obtained by McClatchy News.

The ATV was traveling east when the driver hit the brakes and made a sharp right turn, according to deputies. Authorities said the vehicle was going too fast, “causing it to overturn.”

Both boys, neither of whom were wearing a helmet, were thrown from the ATV, deputies said.

The 4-year-old died at the scene, according to the sheriff’s office. Authorities haven’t released his identity.

The 16-year-old driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, deputies said.

Authorities didn’t provide additional details but said the crash is under investigation.

Forsyth County is about a 40-mile drive northeast from downtown Atlanta.
