Eleven inmates escaped a New Orleans jail Friday, May 16, and 10 remained at large as of 4 p.m. ET, sparking an urgent manhunt in the Crescent City, according to the Orleans Parish Sheriff’s Office and media outlets.

Authorities discovered the detainees were missing at 8:30 a.m. during a headcount at the Orleans Justice Center, WGNO reported, citing the sheriff’s office.

The escapees should be considered “armed and dangerous,” according to ABC News.

“A search for the individuals is currently underway. OPSO is working with local and state law enforcement agencies on the search to return them to custody,” the sheriff’s office said.

One of the inmates was captured in the French Quarter after a foot chase, according to Louisiana State Police.

The Orleans Justice Center, which houses the sheriff’s office and jail, is less than 3 miles from the historic neighborhood.

The public is urged to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious, WDSU reported.

During a May 16 new conference, Orleans Parish Sheriff Susan Hutson called the breach “serious and unacceptable,” according to ABC News.

“We are launching a full investigation to determine how this escape occurred, including reviewing facility protocols, staff performance and physical security measures,” Hutson told reporters.
