A “playful” shelter dog’s friends all got new homes — but she still waits her turn.

“Time after time we have brought another dog into the office, they befriend Chuppie and then get adopted, leaving poor Chuppie feeling melancholy as she watches friend after friend disappear,” an Alabama animal shelter wrote May 2 on Facebook.

The sad dog needs a new home after she arrived at 2nd Chance Shelter in December 2022. She was found as a stray and rescued from a ditch before being named for an anime.

When Chuppie arrived at 2nd Chance, she had hair loss and an injury to one of her hind legs, possibly after being hit by a car, the Boaz-area shelter wrote in social media posts and an email to McClatchy News.

“Chuppie came to the shelter starving and you could see every rib on her body and (she was) not able to use her back legs very well,” the animal organization wrote.

More than two years later, the dog still has limited motion in her hind leg. She’s described as a “playful” and “loving” mixed-breed pup who enjoys going on walks.

“She has a lot of energy, but she is not a hyper dog,” Teresa Camp, office administrator for 2nd Chance, told McClatchy News via email. “She is content to lie around while you are working. She does not bark a lot, however she usually lets us know when someone approaches the shelter.”

The shelter placed the 4-year-old pup in its office, which allows potential adopters to see her. But Chuppie hasn’t had luck so far.

“Chuppie has a medical issue involving her shoulder,” the shelter wrote. “Almost overnight it became swollen causing her to look hunchbacked. She was seen by several veterinarians and they have not been able to figure out what is wrong with her. She basically is a good-natured, energetic dog with a swollen shoulder. She can get around fine, but her walk is more of a hobble. This abnormality seems to make it harder for her to get adopted.”

The overlooked dog, who already visited three vets about the mysterious lump on her shoulder, has another appointment scheduled.

As she continues to wait for a fresh start, Chuppie has grown sad over losing her friends to adoption. The shelter hopes the dog will find a new home before “history repeats itself.”

As of May 14, the Adopt a Pet website shows Chuppie is still up for adoption in Boaz, a roughly 70-mile drive northeast from Birmingham. Details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at secondchanceshelter.biz.
