Lottery club makes pit stop on trip and wins ‘unbelievable’ prize in Michigan
A trip was at its end for a Michigan lottery club, but an unsuspecting stop for a drink and lottery tickets on the way home turned the trip into an “unbelievable” memory.
The lottery club from Genesee County returned home the winner of a $2 million prize, Michigan lottery officials said in an April 30 news release.
The group stayed at a cabin in the Upper Peninsula, a trip it makes frequently, according to officials. The group makes pit stops for lottery tickets when traveling to the cabin and returning home.
At the end of the trip, the club stopped at a gas station in Trout Lake Township for a drink and a few lottery tickets.
The club got back on the road as one member went to scratch off a ticket.
“When I scratched off the prize amount of $2 million, my heart started pounding and I felt like I was having a heart attack,” one of the club members said. “I told my friend we just won $2 million and handed him the ticket.”
Club members claimed their big prize in a $1.3 million lump sum rather than receive annuity payments, officials said. With the money, they plan to live debt free, pay bills and take a trip to Florida, they said.
“You never think you will be the one to win a prize like this, so it feels unreal.”
Trout Lake Township is located in the Upper Peninsula and is about a 330-mile drive northwest from Detroit.
