Father accuses teen of assaulting daughter and is beaten to death, NJ officials say
A man and a 17-year-old boy are accused of fatally beating a father who tried to confront them about an assault involving his daughter, New Jersey authorities said.
The man and teen were charged with “homicide and weapons offenses” in connection with the death of the father, the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office said in an April 24 news release. The teen was charged separately with aggravated assault of a teen girl, prosecutors said.
The man is the teen’s father, according to WPVI and NJ.com.
According to authorities, the man and his daughter went to a residence in Millville on April 20 to have a conversation about the assault.
When they got there, the 17-year-old boy and the man got in a fight at the front door, and the teen started beating the man’s head with a metal baseball bat, prosecutors said.
The teen’s father joined in the fight, taking a metal flashlight to the man’s head, according to the release. The teen also hit the man’s daughter in the head during the fight, authorities said.
Emergency officials arrived and tried to take the man to a hospital, but he died on the way, authorities said.
According to prosecutors, the teen had injuries to his face, but no one else was seriously hurt.
McClatchy News is not naming the people involved to protect the identities of the minors.
In an online obituary, the father was described as “a larger-than-life man who touched many lives with his strength, humor, giving heart, and unwavering love and protection towards family and friends.”
“He laid his life down to do what he does best, to protect his family; to protect his baby girl,” the obituary said.
Millville is about a 40-mile drive southeast from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
