Viral LSU gymnast Livvy Dunne shares bittersweet 11-word statement after LSU loss
One year after helping LSU win its first national championship in gymnastics, Livvy Dunne is saying goodbye.
After watching her teammates miss out on their second consecutive national championship by finishing third in the NCAA semifinals on Thursday, April 17, Dunne announced her retirement from the sport, including sharing a photo from the beginning, where her love of the sport started.
Dunne spent five years on LSU’s gymnastics team. She became one of the highest-paid NIL athletes during her time with the team, Sports Illustrated reports.
Dunne was unable to help her team compete at the semifinals after she suffered an avulsion fracture to her kneecap on March 6.
The 22-year-old is also popular on social media, primarily on TikTok and Instagram.
However, she took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share her bittersweet 11-word statement following her team’s loss.
“(Peace) out gymnastics it’s been real… and of course forever LSU!” Dunne wrote on X.
Shortly after suffering her injury, Dunne and her boyfriend, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes, posed together for a GQ spread.
Dunne announced her decision to return to LSU gymnastics for a fifth season in July 2024.
“Dear LSU, these past four years have changed my life,” she shared at the time. “There’s something about putting on a purple and gold leotard. There’s something about competing in front of 13,000 screaming Tiger fans. There’s something about being pushed by your coaches to be your very best.
“And there’s something about being part of a team that made school history. And no matter how many opportunities have come my way off the mat, there’s just something about LSU. And that’s why I’m here to say. I’m not Dunne yet. Here’s to year five, baby.”
