Man moves from Florida, then wins top lottery prize in new state 2 days later
A man was in disbelief when he won the top lottery prize from a $5 Maryland scratch-off ticket — after two days of living in the Mid-Atlantic state.
The man recently moved to Baltimore from Florida, where he’s played Florida scratch-off lottery tickets since his 18th birthday, according to the Maryland Lottery.
As a new Maryland resident, he bought a Big Money scratch-off lottery ticket from a mall in Towson, the Maryland Lottery said in an April 8 news release.
Though he “had no idea how to play,” he gave the game a try, lottery officials said.
He scored a $50,000 prize after scanning his ticket, according to lottery officials.
“I didn’t think it was real,” the man said when he claimed the win at the Maryland Lottery’s headquarters. “I didn’t think it was real until I came here.”
To make sure the prize was legit, the man showed his scratch-off to a lottery retailer, lottery officials said.
“The clerk scanned it and lost her mind when she saw it was a $50,000 winner,” the man recalled.
The Baltimore resident, who works at a restaurant and has a passion for playing golf, wants to deposit his winnings in the bank, lottery officials said.
The store he purchased the scratch-off from, Daily Deals in the Towson Town Center, located in Baltimore County, will be awarded a $500 bonus for selling him the ticket, according to lottery officials.
It wasn’t specified how much he’ll take home after taxes.
