A Nebraska man was taken into custody after police said he stole EBT cards from residents at a homeless shelter, news outlets report.

An employee at People’s City Mission in Lincoln was arrested on suspicion of public assistance fraud, according to KOLN.

McClatchy News reached out to People’s City Mission for comment but did not immediately hear back.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services received complaints that EBT cardholders staying at the shelter never received their cards in the mail, KLKN reported.

The department contacted the Lincoln Police Department, and its Technical Investigations Unit found that the employee made roughly 63 purchases with at least eight different cards, KLIN reported.

In total, authorities say the employee spent over $3,000, the outlet reported.
