Middle schooler hands out edibles, hospitalizing six classmates, Mississippi cops say
Several students at a Mississippi middle school ended up in the hospital after ingesting edibles police say they got from a classmate.
The student is accused of passing out the edibles at Woolfolk Middle School on March 25, sickening six fellow students, Yazoo City Police Chief Terry Gann told news outlets.
Authorities did not say what substance the snacks were laced with.
The affected students were taken to Baptist Memorial Hospital for treatment, WJTV reported, citing Gann. Their conditions weren’t known as of Wednesday, March 26.
McClatchy News reached out to Yazoo City police for more information March 26 but didn’t immediately hear back.
In a statement, the Mississippi Achievement School District said it was aware of the incident involving “a suspected substance.”
“The matter is currently under investigation, and we are working in coordination with local authorities to determine the facts,” Superintendent Earl Watkins said in an email.
“As a district, we remain committed to the safety and well-being of our students and have taken proactive steps to educate families about products that may appear harmless but pose serious risks,” he said.
Police said the student accused of bringing the edibles and passing them out could face charges.
“We’re trying to get down to where this kid got them from,” Gann told WLBT. “It’s an ongoing investigation.”
Yazoo City is about a 50-mile drive northwest from downtown Jackson.
