Construction worker, 20, dies in fall from 19th floor of high-rise, Georgia cops say
A 20-year-old man died after falling 19 stories from a high-rise development in downtown Atlanta, Georgia, authorities said.
It happened at 10:45 a.m. Thursday, March 20, at a construction site on Mitchell Street, according to the City of Atlanta Police Department. The man wasn’t “alert, conscious or breathing” when officers arrived.
Authorities said he “appeared to have fallen” from the building’s 19th floor. Medical personnel pronounced him dead at the scene, according to police.
A preliminary investigation showed no signs of foul play, Atlanta police said.
Authorities haven’t publicly identified the man, who was a construction worker, WANF and WXIA reported.
The site is the future home of The Mitchell, a mixed-use retail and residential project near Mercedes-Benz Stadium, according to WAGA. The developer, Centennial Yards, addressed the “tragic accident” in a statement posted on its Instagram page March 21.
“Our community is deeply saddened by the tragic accident that occurred at one of the development sites ... within the boundaries of Centennial Yards,” it says.
“Our thoughts are with the affected families.”
Police didn’t release additional details but said the accident remains under investigation.
The man’s cause and manner of death will be determined following an autopsy, authorities said.
