An avid lottery player won a prize so big she wasn’t even sure what she was looking at, Maryland officials said.

She had taken home small prizes in the past but “had a considerably better outcome” on a $100,000 Crossword scratch-off ticket, Maryland Lottery officials said in a March 19 news release.

She won the top prize during a recent visit to the liquor store where she plays the lottery, officials said. She was the only customer in the store during a recent visit, when she opted for a $10 ticket on the game.

Her odds weren’t looking all that great in the first two puzzles or on any of the ticket’s four bonus words, officials said.

“But it was a different story on Puzzle 3, where she was able to form 10 words to land one of the ticket’s $100,000 top prizes,” officials said.

She wasn’t “completely sure of what she was seeing,” so she asked the store clerk to scan her ticket — and learned she was $100,000 richer.

“Although there was no one else around, she still kept her response reserved,” officials said. “She did tell a few friends and family, and added that she has no plans for her winnings except to help family friends.”

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
