Hockey team’s GM trades son for future considerations, and reactions are hilarious
Sports parents have to deal with an abundance of hardships when it comes to catering to their child’s athletic needs — from driving them to endless practices, cheering them on from the sidelines or consoling them when they’re cut.
Then there are the sports parents who… are built with only business in mind? Sure.
On March 14, The Utica Comets, an American Hockey League team in New York affiliated with the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, announced that they were trading defenseman Will MacKinnon to the Cleveland Monsters in exchange for future considerations.
While on the surface this is a common practice, even though you’re basically trading a well-established player for the notion of a better, yet unknown, future player.
But in the Comet’s corner, hilarity ensues because of the team’s general manager — you know, the guy in charge of making trades — is the traded player’s own dad.
That’s right. The GM of the Comets, Dan MacKinnon, showed his son the door, and the fan’s reactions range from hilarious, to astonished, to just plain confused.
While playing college hockey for University of New Hampshire, Will MacKinnon named the Devils as his favorite NHL team. He said he was most thankful for “all the support I get from my family.”
Now, his father has shipped him off without anything to immediately show for it. Awkward, huh?
Fans are going to need a reality show revolving around the MacKinnon house at Christmas this year.
