Oscar winner Gene Hackman, his wife and their dog found dead in New Mexico home
Actor Gene Hackman, who won two Oscars during the course of his career, has died.
According to CNN, Hackman was found in his New Mexico home alongside his wife, Betsy Arakawa, and their dog.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a request for a welfare check at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 26, when they discovered the deceased.
Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Denise Womack-Avila told CNN that an investigation into their deaths is ongoing, but the manner of their deaths “is not believed to be foul play.”
Hackman was 95. Arakawa, a former classical pianist, was 64.
The couple married in 1991.
Hackman won his first Oscar for his role in the 1971 film “The French Connection.”
He won his second 21 years later in 199 for his role in “Unforgiven.”
He retired from film-making in 2004, USA Today reported. He and Arakawa have lived quietly in New Mexico ever since.
That same year, while a guest on Larry King’s show, Hackman said he never saw himself as a star.
“Warren Beatty is a star. Robert Redford is a star. Brad Pitt. I never think of myself that way. I never had the aspirations to be a star. I wanted to be an actor. A movie actor, a theater actor, that’s all I ever wanted to do.”
Prior to achieving his dreams, USA Today reports that Hackman left school at 16 to enlist in the Marines, where he remained for four years.
He then moved to Los Angeles.
Hackman is survived by his three children whom he shared with his late ex-wife, Faye Maltese.
