Waffle House adds surcharge to eggs amid ‘dramatic’ rise in prices. What to know
Your next Waffle House order will soon cost more — if it comes with a side of eggs.
Starting Feb. 3, customers can expect to pay an extra 50 cents per egg amid a “dramatic” rise in egg prices, the Atlanta-based diner chain said in a statement.
“Rather than increasing prices across the menu, this is a temporary targeted surcharge tied” to the rising cost of shell eggs, the statement continued.
Waffle House pointed to the ongoing egg shortage caused by persistent bird flu outbreaks, which led to a loss of 14 million egg-laying chickens across seven states for the week ending Jan. 31, per a U.S. Department of Agriculture report.
“Shell egg availability remains limited and inconsistent,” officials wrote, adding that affected grocers have started imposing purchase limits while “holding prices at record or near-record highs.”
Waffle House said the egg surcharge will be added to all menus.
Customers posted photos of signage announcing the change, which drew mixed reactions.
“I feel so bad for the servers,” a Reddit user commented. “Customers are so vindictive about this kind of extra charge, and they take it out on the workers who have nothing to do with it.”
“I’m thinking, maybe don’t go to Waffle House??” another wrote.
The latest Consumer Price Index report shows meats, poultry, fish and egg prices jumped 0.6 percent in December, “as the eggs index rose 3.2 percent,” according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
The average price of a dozen large grade-A eggs also rose to $4.15 in December, a 50-cent increase from the month before, data show.
It’s not clear when egg availability will rebound, but Waffle House said it will continue monitoring prices.
“While we hope these price fluctuations will be short-lived we cannot predict how long this shortage will last,” the restaurant said.
