David Henrie says he’s lucky his son is alive after scary allergic reaction in Italy
Actor David Henrie is sharing a warning to parents with children with food allergies after enduring a terrifying experience with his own young son.
Henrie, who is best known for his work with Disney’s “Wizards of Waverly Place,” is currently working on a project in Italy with his family, which includes his wife Maria Cahill, and their three children, Pia, James, and Gemma.
On Feb. 1, Henrie took to Instagram to share a photo of himself and his son James at an Italian hospital.
James, 4, has a nut allergy and went into anaphylactic shock at a restaurant.
“Thank God he’s alive,” Henrie wrote. “I wish I would (have) known this before traveling.”
“Make sure the water your pasta is made in is not mixed with anything else like ravioli which may contain pine nuts,” Henrie continued.
“My son had an anaphylactic reaction last night and the EpiPen saved his life. The God for the EpiPen and His Grace,” he concluded his statement.
According the USDA, tree nuts are among the most common food allergies.
Those with common food allergies are encouraged to always inquire about their order, when eating at restaurants.
FARE suggests that those with allergies should first research the restaurant before patronizing it when possible.
It’s also suggested that clear communication be made about the allergy once at the restaurant before ordering.
“Ask what is in your dish and how it’s prepared. Make sure your server understands what you are allergic to, and explain that cross-contact must be avoided. Explain what procedures a restaurant should follow to keep your food safe. You may want to speak to the manager and the chef, just to be sure. You can also use a chef card or My Teal Ticket to clearly communicate your allergens.”
Henrie hasn’t shared any additional updates on how James is doing.
