Storm traps climbers on slick mountain overnight on Christmas Eve, Nevada rescuers say
A pair of climbers spent Christmas Eve trapped on a slick mountain in Nevada after they were unable to continue in stormy conditions, rescuers said.
Rescuers weren’t able to help Dec. 24 due to high winds, but flew in at about 7 a.m. the next day to hoist them off the mountain, Las Vegas Metro Police Search and Rescue said on its social media accounts.
The agency shared a photo of the rescue helicopter approaching the red rock mountain during the rescue.
The two were climbing a red rock mountain known as “Olive Oil” when the storm passed through and trapped them, rescuers said.
The weather improved enough by the morning for the Christmas rescue. Rescuers packaged and extracted them to a Bureau of Land Management fire station helipad, officials said. Neither climber was injured.
“Fun multi pitch route but the weather … glad they are okay!” someone said in the comments on the post.
“Every time I go out with my dogs and I’m visually too far to see ‘civilization’ … I think about you heroes,” someone else said.
