A hiker didn’t return home when he told friends he would, so they went out looking for him and found his body on a rock ledge, Colorado officials said.

The 42-year-old hiker had said he would return home around dark on Monday, Dec. 16, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. The sun set at 4:37 p.m. that day.

The hiker’s friends found his body on the Second Flatiron mountain just outside Boulder and reported it about 9 p.m., officials said.

First responders from several agencies recovered the body and determined the hiker had fallen, officials said.

Officials are withholding the hiker’s identity until they can positively identify him and notify his family.
