A filling breakfast or a good night’s sleep may be key for students to mentally prepare for an exam.

For Christina Winn, however, her “good-luck ritual” involves buying an Iowa lottery ticket ahead of a big test.

The nursing student stuck to her routine before a final exam and purchased a scratch-off ticket at a Casey’s in Fort Madison, Iowa lottery officials said.

When she scratched it off before her exam, she was shocked to see a $10,000 prize, lottery officials said in a Dec. 13 news release.

“I scratched it and I was like, ‘There’s no way!’” the 41-year-old said in the release.

At first, she thought the prize was a joke. She took the scratch-off back to the convenience store and had the clerk scan her ticket.

The clerk said, “I think you won $10,000,” according to Winn.

The nursing student, who is also a mother and works at a nursing home, said the prize will help her “breathe a little bit easier.”

She plans to spend part of her winnings on Christmas gifts and save the remainder.

Fort Madison is about a 165-mile drive southeast from Des Moines.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
