Dog uncovers mysterious bone — 4 months after finding a human skull, Alabama cops say
Another mysterious bone has been uncovered by a dog who dug up a human skull four months ago in Alabama, officials said.
The dog found a “long bone” on Thursday, Dec. 12, in the same area of a Birmingham neighborhood where the skull was discovered, but it’s unclear where the bone came from, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office said in a report shared with McClatchy News.
“A canvas of nearby vacant properties and doorbell cameras did not reveal the origin of the bone nor the area of the neighborhood where the dog had been roaming,” the report said.
In August, a homicide investigation began after an autopsy revealed gunshot wounds to the skull, according to an Aug. 20 news release by the Birmingham Police Department.
Officials said the dog brought the skull to the shoulder of the road next to his owner’s home, then the owner notified police. The original location of where the skull was found is unknown, and no other human remains were discovered at that time, the coroner said.
Through a DNA analysis, officials learned that the skull belonged to an adult male, but the DNA profile developed did not match anyone in the Combined DNA Index System, according to the coroner’s report.
The investigation is ongoing, and a new analysis is being performed on the “long bone” to determine if it’s human and related to the skull, officials said.
As of Dec. 13, Alabama has 291 missing person cases open, according to the World Population Review.
