A man accused of driving drunk hit several cars, then witnesses attacked him, Georgia police told news outlets.

The man was behind the wheel when he lost control, the Atlanta Police Department said. He flipped his car and crashed into other vehicles along a street in the Sweet Auburn neighborhood late Sunday, Dec. 8, officers wrote in a preliminary news release and told TV stations.

After the man and his passenger got out of the crashed car, they reportedly “engaged in a physical altercation with several males.” People who witnessed the crash started beating up the driver before at least one member of the group shot him, police told WXIA and WAGA.

When officers responded to the scene east of downtown Atlanta, everyone from the group was gone. The driver, who had been shot in the leg, was taken to a hospital in “stable” condition, police said.

An investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and no one had been arrested as of early Dec. 9. Officers ask anyone with information to call them at 404-658-6666 or Crime Stoppers at 404-577-8477, WANF reported.

The Atlanta Police Department didn’t immediately share additional information about the crash with McClatchy News on Dec. 9.
