A fight broke out between two Virginia high school students on campus, sending one teen to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and putting the school on lockdown, police said.

Officers responded to a physical altercation at Henrico High School in Richmond at about 12:30 p.m., Henrico County police said in a Dec. 4 Facebook post.

At the scene, they found two teenage boys — one suffering serious injuries as a result of a stabbing, police said. The stabbed teen was rushed to a hospital for treatment, and the other teen was sent to a different hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

Police said the incident was isolated and there was no active threat, but the school remained on lockdown while detectives continued investigating.

“We understand the concern many parents may have regarding the incident,” Henrico Chief of Police Eric English said in a statement. “Please know we will work as quickly and thoroughly as possible to determine what led up to this incident.”

School officials notified parents that the school was on lockdown but advised them to not pick up the students early, according to a statement shared with McClatchy News by a school spokesperson.

As of 3:16 p.m., the student with non-life-threatening injuries is in police custody while the other student remains at the hospital, the spokesperson said.

“We continue to keep him and his family in our thoughts and prayers,” the spokesperson said.

The lockdown was lifted at 3:50 p.m., at the end of student dismissal, according to the school.

“Today’s stabbing of a Henrico High School student is troubling for our entire community,” Henrico School Superintendent Amy Cashwell and Chief of Police Eric English said in a joint statement shared with McClatchy News. “...We also want to acknowledge and thank the Henrico High School students, staff members and families who remained flexible and understanding throughout a tremendously difficult day.”

The incident is under investigation with more details to come, police said.
