Flying with Thanksgiving leftovers? Here’s what you can and can’t bring on board

After filling up on Thanksgiving fixings, it’s not uncommon to pack a plate (or two) to go.

But will your coveted leftovers make it past airport security?

While most foods are OK to fly with, the best mode of transport largely depends on the item, according to the U.S. Transportation Security Administration.

“If it’s a solid item, then it can go through a checkpoint,” the administration’s website says. “However, if you can spill it, spread it, spray it, pump it or pour it, and it’s larger than 3.4 ounces, then it should go in a checked bag.”

Food items that can be safely packed in a carry-on bag include:

  • Baked goods
  • Meats
  • Stuffing
  • Casseroles
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables
  • Spices

Food that should be stowed in checked baggage include:

  • Gravy
  • Cranberry sauce
  • Wine
  • Canned fruits and vegetables
  • Jams, jellies and preserves
  • Syrup

Even when allowed, some foods may need extra inspection, so travelers are advised to put them somewhere in their carry-on that’s easily accessible, the TSA said. Also, be prepared to remove such items from your bag to be screened at security checkpoints.

Officials say proper food storage is also important to reduce the risk of food-borne illness.

“If you need to keep items cold during your trip, ice packs are permissible, but they must be frozen solid and not melted when they go through security screening,” according to the TSA.
