If you don’t see Freddie Prinze Jr. and his wife, Sarah Michelle Gellar, in public very often, it’s because they don’t want you to.

The 48-year-old “She’s All That” star explained why he and Gellar, 47, avoid the public spotlight as much as possible, despite being two very recognizable stars.

“That’s by choice, though,” he said during an appearance on the “Oldish” podcast, hosted by Prinze’s “Freddie” co-star Brian Austin Green, Green’s wife, Sharna Burgess, and Randy Spelling.

“You can control it to a certain degree,” he added, according to People.

Prinze opened up about his and his wife’s lifestyle after Spelling said he admired the way they “both have seemed to stay out of the public” throughout their 22-year marriage.

Spelling noted that it seems “very hard for a lot of people” to maintain a private lifestyle, but Prinze says there’s no secret to it.

“I don’t know how deliberate [others] are in trying to avoid that BS,” Prinze explains. “I know how easy it’s been for us because I don’t go anywhere. I don’t go to parties.”

In fact, the “I Know What You Did Last Summer” actor says he can count on one hand how many clubs he has been to in his life—noting that one of those clubs was with Green, 51.

But that’s not to say he and Gellar don’t have their favorite spots and go-to restaurants. They just tend to avoid the trendy places that are usually filled with paparazzi.

And when paparazzi are nearby, they have a system in place that ensures they’re not bothered.

“There’s times where [paparazzi] wait at the bottom of our street, but there’s people that are way more famous than me on my street,” he said on the podcast.

“So I’ll just make sure they leave first,” he continued. “They’ll go follow Schwarzenegger and leave me alone. You know what I mean?”

All in all, Prinze says avoiding the public spotlight isn’t hard for those who really want to. And since he and his wife aren’t about that life, they don’t pretend to be.

“So we’re good at avoiding it,” he says.

The couple celebrated their 22nd wedding anniversary in September.

Gellar highlighted the moment with a rare photo of the two on Instagram on Sept. 1, coupled with a short-but-sweet caption.

“22,” she wrote, while tagging her husband and adding a few emojis.

While they don’t step out in public often, they do share life updates on social media, albeit rarely.

On Sept. 19, Gellar took to Instagram to wish their daughter, Charlotte, a happy 15th birthday. She returned one day later to do the same for their now 12-year-old son, Rocky.

“12 years ago, Charlotte told us all she wanted for her third bday was you,” she wrote in the caption. “And even though you weren’t due for another three weeks, she got her wish… and we all got the greatest gift.”

She posted another photo of her and Prinze standing in front of “The Haunted Mansion” ride at Disneyland in Anaheim, California on Oct. 15, just in time for the spooky season.

The couple originally met in 1997 while filming “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” Gellar was cast as Helen Shivers, while Prinze Jr. played Ray Bronson. They were also both cast in “She’s All That” in 1999, though Gellar had a non-speaking cameo.

Their friendship took a romantic turn in 2000 when they were supposed to meet a mutual friend for dinner. That friend missed her flight and couldn’t make it, but Gellar and Prinze still showed up.

They got engaged one year later, and tied the knot in September 2002.

Gellar and Prinze have worked together on numerous projects over the years.

Aside from “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” they both starred in “Scooby-Doo” (2002), “Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed” (2004), “Happily N’Ever After” (2006), and “Star Wars Rebels” (2014–2018).
