Just in time for Halloween: Brush fire leads to smoky scenes in Salem, officials say
Just days before Halloween, a town known for its spooky festivities is turned into a smoky scene due to a brush fire, according to Massachusetts officials.
A brush fire has spread through parts of Salem and Lynn.
“The brush fire has been smoldering for the past day creating smoky conditions in the surrounding area,” a Facebook post by the Salem, Massachusetts - City Government page said.
Thousands of people are visiting the area in light of Halloween festivities, NECN reported. Salem was the location of the infamous Witch Trials in the 17th Century.
“The fire’s been burning over my shoulder here but not just in this one area, we have four different fires that are surrounding the neighborhoods in this area and Lynn has some on their side,” Salem Fire Chief Alan Dionne told the news outlet.
Between 60 to 80 acres of wooded area have been destroyed by the fires, Dionne told WFXT.
The fire initially broke out near a Walmart and sent “a large plume of smoke” in the air, WHDH reported.
No injuries have been reported.
