A Virginia man thought he had his vehicle stolen, until it mysteriously reappeared in the exact parking spot he left it in, authorities said.

Two nights later, the sequence happened again, “almost like magic,” the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office said in an Oct. 17 news release on Facebook.

Now, two men — 22 and 21 — have been arrested in connection with the unusual case of vehicle larceny, the sheriff’s office said.

The 22-year-old driver of the stolen car told authorities he started taking a “joy ride” after he found a set of keys in the unlocked vehicle. He went for rides on Oct. 6 and Oct. 8, then attempted to take the car out again on Oct. 16, deputies said.

“They could have put gas in it at least,” David Basye, the vehicle owner, jokingly told WUSA.

Basye told the outlet he eventually installed home surveillance cameras to keep watch on his vehicle. But around 9 p.m. on Oct. 16, the vehicle was taken again, according to the sheriff’s office.

About an hour later, deputies spotted the stolen vehicle on a highway and tried to make a traffic stop, but the driver did not stop, the release said. Then authorities cut the car off, and the driver attempted to run away before he was detained, the sheriff’s office said.

As the man tried to escape, he left a trail of suspected fentanyl pills behind him, authorities said. Deputies also said he did not have a valid driver’s license.

The duo was taken to a regional jail, where a search led to the discovery of more controlled substances, the sheriff’s office said.

The 22-year-old was held without bond on several charges, including two counts of unauthorized use of a vehicle, possession of controlled substances and driving without a license, and the 21-year-old was held on a $3,000 bond on charges of possession of controlled substances and felony by a prisoner, the sheriff’s office said.
