A 4-year-old fatally shot himself after he was left alone with a gun, Georgia police say.

Now, his mother’s boyfriend is charged in connection to his death, according to the Glynn County Police Department.

Joshua Codogan, 25, was arrested on a count of second-degree murder and evidence tampering after authorities said he left the child unattended in a car with a loose gun.

Officers were called just after 7:20 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, about a gunshot victim at the Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick, police said in an Oct. 17 news release. There they found the 4-year-old boy in critical condition.

The child was flown to a hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, where he died, police said.

Investigators learned the shooting happened at a home where the boy was left alone in a car with an unsecured gun, according to the release.

Authorities haven’t publicly identified the child.

Codogan remained in custody at the Glynn County Jail as of Oct. 18, online records show.

Glynn County is about a 70-mile drive southwest from Savannah.
