A 17-year-old is accused of killing an Alabama man who deputies originally thought was the victim of a hit-and-run, a sheriff said.

Family members of Jonathan Foster, 40, looked sorrowful as they stood next to deputies and investigators with the Walker County Sheriff’s Office during a news conference on Thursday, Oct. 17, as new details about their loved one’s death were released.

“In the early stages all evidence pointed to a tragic traffic accident; however, this investigation unfolded and additional information came to life, raising concerns about the possibility of foul play,” said Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith.

Deputies said they got a call around 4:55 a.m. on Oct. 14 reporting a person lying in the median of a highway in Argo, about a 25-mile drive northeast of Birmingham.

The man, identified as Foster, was taken to the University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital, where he died, according to records.

Smith said they believed the man had been struck by a vehicle, but an autopsy they received two days later revealed injuries proving that was not the case.

Through interviews and tips from the community, investigators gathered evidence, which led to a warrant for murder against a 17-year-old, Smith said.

The teenager, who’s name was not revealed due to their age, is at Walker County Jail, the sheriff said. No motive was shared.

“I want to express my deepest sincere condolences to the family and the loved ones of Mr. Foster,” Smith said. “Losing a loved one in such a sudden and violent way is unimaginable.”

Officials said the investigation is ongoing.
