Neighbor befriended family, then sexually abused young girl for years, Oregon cops say
A 37-year-old man befriended his neighbors, then sexually abused a young girl for five years in Oregon, police said.
Joseph Phillip Stubbs was arrested Oct. 12 in his Beaverton home on suspicion of six counts of first-degree sex abuse, the city police department said in a news release.
He became friends with the child’s family while living at the same apartment complex, police said.
“Stubbs gained the trust of the family and often spent time in their apartment when the minor victim was there,” police said.
Police said the sexual abuse began when the girl was 8 and in third grade.
It went on for five years — until she was 13 — and included “numerous alleged inappropriate contacts,” police said.
Police began investigating Stubbs in April after getting a report of sexual abuse from someone at a Beaverton middle school, authorities said.
Authorities then contacted the 13-year-old’s parents who told them about the abuse, police said.
Stubbs is at the Washington County Jail in Hillsboro.
Police said they suspect there may be more victims. Anyone who has had an inappropriate interaction with Stubbs can call detective Tim Wilburn at 503-526-2261.
Beaverton is a less than 10-mile drive southwest from Portland.
