Selena Gomez hits back at naysayers, says being ‘vulnerable’ is not ‘shameful’
Selena Gomez is responding to the people who are judging her for her decision to speak out about the fertility issues she’s facing due to other health issues she’s struggled with over the years.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Gomez opened up for the first time about being unable to carry her own children.
“I haven’t ever said this,” she told the magazine, “but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children.”
Gomez continued, explaining that she’s struggled with “a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”
“It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it,” the actress said of how she would start a family. “I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone.”
“[But] I’m in a much better place with that. I find it a blessing that there are wonderful people willing to do surrogacy or adoption, which are both huge possibilities for me,” Gomez told Vanity Fair.
“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby.”

Now, in a speech she gave at a recent event, Gomez is responding to the people who described her candor as “shameful.”
“I truly believe there is power in being vulnerable and telling people you need help, when you want help,” Gomez said.
“That is not shameful,” Gomez is seen telling those in attendance. “So yeah, I shared that I can’t carry a child. Yeah, I shared I have bipolar,” she said.
She continued, saying she wants to be “an advocate for women.”
“That’s why I share,” she continued. “That’s why I like the be honest. Because everybody is going through something. I don’t have it all put together.”
Gomez then turned her attention to a specific person and her younger sister who was seated next to her, telling them, “so do not let anyone ever tell you are not a good person, that you are kind, that you will treat people with respect because that is not lame. That is so cool.”
Gomez finished her statements, saying, “Screw anyone who tells you you’re a victim. You’re a survivor in my book.”
