Two people are dead after police say a Texas deputy was involved in a murder-suicide.

Around 7:50 p.m. Sept. 16, Houston police were called to an apartment complex after a resident said a bullet came through her home from an upstairs apartment, according to a news release.

Police went to the upstairs apartment, but no one answered.

The door to the apartment was unlocked, so police entered, authorities said. That’s when they found a 28-year-old woman lying on the living room floor with multiple gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officers then found a 33-year-old man in a bedroom dead from an apparent suicide, according to police.

The man and woman were in a relationship and had recently moved into the apartment, a witness told police.

The names of the man and woman have not been released, but police have confirmed the man was a Harris County Precinct 4 deputy constable, officials told KHOU.

Constable Mark Herman said the man was a deputy who worked night shift patrol, KHOU reported.

Murder-suicide

Up to 600 murder-suicides happen each year, according to the FBI. They account for about 1,000 deaths a year.

“Although uncommon, such incidents vary widely in terms of the persons involved, how they are related, and where the crimes take place,” the FBI reported. “Usually, law enforcement personnel deal with murder-suicides involving two people in domestic settings or relationships.”

About 65% of murder-suicides involve intimate partners, officials said, and 81% happen in the home.
