Wolf bites two drivers waiting outside cars on highway near woods, Alaska troopers say
A wolf attacked two drivers on an Alaska highway as they waited outside their cars in a construction zone, troopers say.
While the motorists waited for a pilot car, or escort vehicle, on Dalton Highway the afternoon of Monday, Aug. 19, a wolf approached, Alaska State Troopers said in an Aug. 20 news release.
The wolf bit both “in their lower extremities,” leaving them with “puncture wounds,” troopers said.
Another driver fired a gun at the wolf, and it fled into the woods, troopers said, adding that they do not believe the wolf was hit.
The pair were treated for their injuries in Fairbanks, according to troopers.
Troopers said they did not find the wolf in the area on Monday and notified the Alaska Department of Fish and Game about the incident.
Troopers went on to urge people not to feed wildlife.
“Even though these individuals were not feeding the wolf, it was observed to be exhibiting behavior indicative of having been fed by other motorists,” troopers said.
Not only is feeding wildlife dangerous, it is also illegal under state law and could result in a fine, according to troopers.
Dalton Highway runs through northern Alaska.
