A 9-year-old girl riding a bike died after being struck by a driver in a Pennsylvania neighborhood, police say.

The Pittsburgh Public Safety Department said the girl was found “with traumatic injuries” when first responders discovered her just after 5:30 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18.

She was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead, police said. The girl was identified as Courtney Carter, according to Pittsburgh Mayor Ed Gainey.

“I saw my baby take her last breath,” said Cory Carter, who told WPXI he rushed to the hospital after being told his daughter was struck.

Police said the driver stayed on the scene and cooperated with officers. No charges have been filed.

Gainey said Monday that investigators were continuing to work the incident.

“Once the investigation is complete, our vision zero fatal crash response team will complete a site visit to determine what improvements can be made to ensure that this never happens again,” the mayor said in a statement posted to Facebook.

Interviewed by KDKA, Cory Carter described his daughter as a “beautiful person inside and out.”

“She was my first daughter, my first love,” he told KDKA. “She was my everything. I can’t believe she is gone.”

“She deserved better. She deserves justice,” the father added to WPXI.
