A person died after they were hit by a bullet fired in a neighboring apartment, California police say.

Officers responded to a “shots fired” call at about 9:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 5, the Los Angeles Police Department said in an Aug. 6 news release.

When officers arrived at the North Hollywood building, they found a person with a gunshot wound inside one of the apartments, police said.

Detectives learned a gun was discharged from an adjacent apartment and “penetrated the neighboring wall, striking the victim,” police said.

Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics declared the person dead on scene, police said.

An LAPD police spokesperson told McClatchy News in an Aug. 7 email no additional information would be released “at this time.”

The spokesperson added that the coroner’s office is working to confirm the person’s identity, which will be released once their next of kin has been notified.

Police ask for anyone with information about the shooting to contact them at 818-374-9550.
