Police in Maine are investigating after a mother and her two daughters were found dead inside a home.

On July 27, police were called to a home in Mechanic Falls after a U-Haul truck was reported stolen when it wasn’t returned to the company, according to an Aug. 1 news release from police.

When officers went inside the home, they found 37-year-old Jennifer Barney dead. Police then found 7-year-old Hope West and 11-year-old Harmony West dead inside.

Barney was the girls’ mother, according to multiple news outlets.

An autopsy revealed that Hope and Harmony died as a result of homicide and Barney died by suicide, according to police.

One of the girls died from multiple stab wounds and the other died from multiple injuries, according to the Maine Department of Public Safety, WMTW reported.

A Facebook post by Regional School Unit 16 said the community faced an “unimaginable loss” with the death of two Elm Street School students.

A GoFundMe page created for the girls said both attended the school and that they “were the best of friends.”

“Our hearts have been shattered by the tragedy of their passing,” the page said.

The girls’ grandmother, Davina Wilcox, told WGME that Harmony loved unicorns and to wear makeup and dress up and that Hope loved cats and her favorite color was purple.

“We’re all in shock. Distraught. Devastated,” Wilcox said. “Never expected in a million years I’d be burying my grandchildren.”
