Shelter dog with rough past was ‘the sweetest girl.’ Then line formed outside shelter
A dog with a rough past needed a new home — then adopters flocked to her South Carolina shelter.
“We posted her on our social media accounts and the response was incredible,” a Greenville Humane Society spokesperson told McClatchy News in a July 19 email. “We had a line forming before the adoption center even opened! She was adopted 20 minutes after opening and is going to be so loved in her new home.”
The heartwarming update came after Bernice the dog went through a rough patch. She was “rescued from a hoarding case,” and received some medical care before arriving at the shelter July 1, according to the animal organization.
“When she got here, we noticed she was suffering from significant dry eye and many of her teeth were worn down,” the shelter wrote. “Even with all that she had been through, she was still the sweetest girl.”
As Bernice waited for a home, the shelter shared a photo of her with a grumpy face and a caption that read: “Bernice is a whole mood.”
In another social media post, the 2-year-old pup was described as a treat lover and “the most loving, polite, and loyal dog you will ever meet.” But there was one catch.
“You may be wondering, ‘She seems perfect, but surely there’s something wrong with her?!’” the humane society wrote July 18 on Facebook. “Well, she’s not great with stairs. Yes, stairs. So, if you have stairs, you may be carrying 45lbs of pure love up and down throughout the day. But honestly, worth it.”
Then after Bernice’s story received an overwhelming response, the shelter shared the good news that she got a new owner.
“Our staff is always happy to see a shelter pet find their forever home — especially ones that have been through difficult situations in their life,” the shelter wrote. “Bernice never gave up, and she deserves to live the rest of her life with a family that will appreciate her and spoil her every single day.”
