Two people aboard a sinking boat off San Diego required a late-night rescue, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.

The agency received multiple 911 calls about a boat taking on water about 8 miles west of San Diego just after 12 a.m. Monday, July 15, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

A nearby U.S. Navy ship and city lifeguards joined Coast Guard crews in searching for the boat, officials said.

The two people on the sinking boat fired a flare to help rescuers locate them, officials said.

Coast Guard crew members tried to stop the boat from sinking but could not find the leak, the agency reported.

The two people, both Mexican nationals with visas, were taken to shore and the vessel set adrift with a navigation warning because the flooding made the boat unsafe to tow, officials said.

After meeting with Border Patrol agents, the two boaters waited for their families to pick them up, officials said.
