Powerball player misses $73 million jackpot — but still wins big in North Carolina
A Powerball player just missed a $73 million jackpot prize — but is still in for a big windfall in North Carolina.
The person bought a ticket that matched all but one number in the June 22 drawing, making it worth $50,000, results show.
The winning numbers: white balls 4-5-15-32-62, with red Powerball 21.
So, where was the winning ticket sold? The winner bought it online in Asheboro, a roughly 70-mile drive west from Raleigh, an N.C. Education Lottery spokesperson told McClatchy News via email.
“Check your emails, folks,” lottery officials wrote June 23 on X, formerly known as Twitter.
The lottery didn’t say whether the prize had been claimed as of June 24. In North Carolina, lucky ticket holders have about six months to cash in their prizes, according to drawing game rules.
To win $50,000, the lucky player matched four of the white balls and the red ball, a combination with odds of 1 in 913,129. The person’s ticket was one number from scoring the larger jackpot prize, estimated at $73 million the night of the drawing, according to the Powerball website.

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.
The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.
Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.
Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.
Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
