A man and a woman seen on video tossing puppies in a dumpster were arrested, Louisiana deputies told news outlets.

The pair, both 22 years old, each face two counts of aggravated animal cruelty in connection with the June 2 incident, according to the St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office.

It happened at 6:30 p.m. behind Sebastien’s West End Seafood in Opelousas, St. Landry Crime Stoppers said. Surveillance video shows a woman approach a dumpster behind the business with one of the dogs in her arms and the other following close behind.

She throws the first puppy in the trash bin, then picks up the second dog and throws it in too, the video shows. She and a man she arrived with walked away soon after, video shows.

“It was their own personal dogs,” Spencer Cornette, lead investigator with the sheriff’s office, told The Acadiana Advocate. “(The dogs) had chewed some wire inside their home and tore the house up. They … took their frustration out on the dogs.”

Authorities said the puppies were rescued by a neighbor who took them in, KATC reported.

The dogs are now in the care of Southern States Bully Rescue, according to The Acadiana Advocate.

In a June 6 update, the rescue said the pups have a long road ahead.

“Due to being thrown away in a dumpster at a seafood market and not being found for hours, they likely ate a lot of fish remnants and are now throwing up a lot of fish bones,” a post shared on the group’s Facebook page says.

“We are praying they do not have a blockage.”

It’s not clear if or when the dogs will be available for adoption.

Opelousas is about a 60-mile drive west from downtown Baton Rouge.
