Boat flips, dumping four overboard off Alabama. An SOS message alerts rescuers
An SOS message alerted rescuers to four people who had been thrown into the water when their boat capsized off Alabama, the U.S. Coast Guard said.
The message was sent from a satellite device to watchstanders at about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, May 30, the U.S. Coast Guard’s Eighth District said in a news release.
One person got in touch with authorities and told them he had been on a 28-foot catamaran that capsized near Dauphin Island, rescuers said.
Four people were sent into the water without life jackets, the Coast Guard said.
A helicopter responded and airlifted the boaters to safety.
A photo shows the boaters with their rescuers, standing in soaked clothes but otherwise OK and smiling.
No injuries were reported, officials said.
Dauphin Island is on the Gulf Coast.
