Child pulled from home engulfed in flames dies from injuries, Georgia officials say
Firefighters responded to a call about a raging house fire in the middle of the night, Georgia officials say.
First responders arrived to a Barrow County home engulfed in flames around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 20, according to a Facebook news release from Barrow County Emergency Services. The home, located in Winder, was “heavily involved in fire” and still had someone inside after others had escaped the flames, Barrow County Emergency Service public information officer Scott Dakin said in the release.
Upon learning of the person trapped inside, firefighters made “rapid entry” through one of the home’s bedroom windows, officials said. Once inside, firefighters found who they were searching for — an 8-year-old child — on one of the beds.
The firefighters who found the child grabbed them and pulled them through a window, officials said. The child needed “immediate patient care,” so emergency medical personnel gave the child medical attention.
“This was a very rapid search and rescue under heavy fire conditions,” Dakin said in the release. “The firefighters worked fast and hard while managing many different operations at one time.”
Despite the firefighters’ “heroic efforts,”, the child died from their injuries, Deputy Chief Brett Skinner said. Two adults from the house fire were sent to the hospital.
Winder is about 50 miles northeast of Atlanta.
