‘Majestic’ sea creature — with ‘very unique’ tail — surprises photographer. See photos
Nature photographer Ken Grille regularly joins whale-watching tours. He enters each tour with an open mind, eager to see whatever wildlife he can.
Recently though, Grille saw a post about a “very unique” humpback whale named Ventisca — and he wanted to spot her with his own camera, he said in an Oct. 9 Facebook post.
When Grille set out on an Oct. 3 tour in Cape Cod Bay with Hyannis Whale Watcher Cruises, he was hopeful that he would catch a glimpse of Ventisca, who is named after the Spanish word for blizzard or snowstorm because of her irregular white markings.
“I wasn’t confident that it would happen,” Grille wrote on Facebook. “But as magical as these trips have been this season, it continued. We arrived out at Stellwagen Bank and the first whale we saw (with another whale called Wonderland) was, you guessed it, VENTISCA!”
Photos show the humpback’s “blizzardy tail” with a unique mix of black and white as well as her white spotted hump.
“She gave us some great looks and showed us her amazing tail,” Grille said in his post.
Other social media users shared their excitement about Ventisca’s visit.
“So majestic and beautiful,” one person commented.
“She is beautiful,” another person wrote.
