Toddler killed when she wandered into road and laid down in traffic, Maine cops say

A wandering toddler was run over and killed in south Maine when she walked into the road and laid down in traffic, according to Maine State Police.

It happened around 2:23 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, on rural Windsor Road in the Chelsea community, police said in a news release. Chelsea is about 60 miles southwest of Bangor.

The identity of the girl has not been released.

“It was determined that a 62-year-old male driver from Chelsea was traveling northbound on Windsor Road in his 2007 GMC flatbed tow truck when he struck a child,” police said.

“The child who was 21 months old was playing outside a residence on Windsor Road when she wandered into the roadway and laid down. The driver did not realize that it was a child laying in the road until the vehicle struck her.”

Witnesses and state troopers performed CPR until an ambulance arrived, officials said.

“The child was transported to Maine General Hospital where she was pronounced dead,” police said

An investigation is underway. The identities of the child’s caretakers were not released.

The girl, named Majesty, was in the care of her foster mother at the time, according to station WGME. The woman went inside the home “to grab some laundry to hang on the line” and that’s when the girl walked away, station said. The home belongs to a friend of the family, it was reported.
