A woman was traveling east on a Missouri highway when a piece of a road sign crashed through her windshield, authorities said. She died in the crash.

Officers with the St. Louis County Police Department responded to the fatal incident at about 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 3, according to a news release.

Officers found two damaged vehicles — one of the eastbound lane’s shoulder of North Highway 67 and one on the westbound shoulder, police said.

Investigators learned one vehicle was traveling west when it hit an object — “possibly a street sign,” according to the release. This caused part of the sign to fly into the eastbound driver’s vehicle, police said.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. Her name has not been released. The other driver, who was not injured, stayed on scene and is cooperating with police.

An investigation is ongoing.
