Residents were evacuated from a California neighborhood after “suspicious” packages rained down via a parachute, authorities said. But there was a harmless explanation.

The San Dimas Sheriff’s department posted photos of the colorful parachute with two packages attached to Facebook on July 28.

Deputies evacuated nearby residents while a bomb squad investigated, authorities said.

They discovered the packages were “a science project only,” the post says. Residents were allowed to return to their homes.

Officials shared photos of the project showing a foam box with what appears to be sealed test tubes inside.

San Dimas is about 30 miles east of Los Angeles.
