A retiree in Maryland has been playing the same numbers at the lottery for years. His strategy finally “paid off.”

The man, an unnamed resident of Lutherville, bought a randomly generated lottery ticket years ago, and the numbers happened to contain several dates that are important to him, according to a March 7 news release from the Maryland Lottery.

“I got the ticket one day and I have played those numbers every time for the past 10 years,” the man, a retired government employee, told the Maryland Lottery.

His fortune changed when he purchased an $8 ticket at a gas station for a Feb. 27 drawing.

When the winning numbers were released, he realized he’d won the $50,000 Double Play prize.

He was also one number off from winning a $10 million prize.

“I am very happy with $50,000,” he told the Maryland Lottery. “It was amazing to win.”

He and his wife intend to use the winnings to pay bills and go on a “much-needed vacation.”

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
