After sending in a handwritten letter to county officials in California, requesting permission to have a unicorn in her backyard, a young girl is all set.
The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control received a letter from the young girl, Madeline, that read, “Dear LA County, I would like your approval if I can have a unicorn in my backyard if I can find one. Please send me a letter in response,” according to a Facebook post.
Madeline received much more than a response letter.
In addition to a preapproved unicorn license and pink heart-shaped license tag, Madeline also got a white plush toy unicorn (with purple hooves) as a stand-in until she can find the elusive creature, the department’s post said.
“It’s always rewarding to hear from young people who thoughtfully consider the requirements of providing a loving home to animals,” the letter said.
The preapproved license came with some unicorn-specific conditions, including that the mythical creature must be “given regular access to sunlight, moonbeams and rainbows,” according to the letter. The animal must also be given a favorite treat, watermelon, “at least once each week,” and its horn must be polished at least once a month.
“Any sparkles or glitter used on the unicorn must be nontoxic and biodegradable to ensure the unicorn’s good health,” the letter said.
The department’s Facebook post went on to thank Madeline for reaching out to them.
“Why, yes – we DO license unicorns!” the post concludes.
