Husband’s snack run during family gathering turns into lucky Maryland lottery win
An impromptu family gathering turned into a celebration recently after a lucky $10 Maryland lottery scratch-off ticket.
Alvaro Guevara-Mejia, 27, told Maryland lottery officials he was at a family gathering Friday, Oct. 28, when he ran out to grab extra snacks, according to an Oct. 31 news release.
“My whole family was together that Friday,” Guevara-Mejia told officials. “All of our schedules just worked out, which is unusual. We weren’t celebrating anything particular, just enjoying being together.”
A daily lottery player, Guevara-Mejia usually stops to grab a ticket on his way home from his job as a construction worker, he said. When he got to Brightseat Liquors in Landover for snacks, he remembered he had a winning ticket from earlier that day, so he decided to cash it.
As he cashed his ticket, he noticed that his favorite kind of ticket, a Money Rush scratch-off was available, so he snagged a ticket and got to scratching, officials said.
“I thought at first it was a $500 win, which is a big deal for us. But when I was cashing it in, the clerk and I realized that it was $50,000. Neither of us could believe it,” Guevara-Mejia said.
With his lucky ticket in hand, Guevara-Mejia went back home to his family and announced his prize, officials said. When his wife saw the prize, her hands started shaking.
“We’ve been saving for a house, and this puts us way ahead of where we expected,” she told officials.
Landover is about 10 miles east of Washington, D.C.
