A beloved grandfather was killed when he was pinned between a tractor and an empty trailer while working at a peanut mill, according to Alabama officials.

Glenn Pate, the owner of Dixie Peanut Company in Ashford, died Tuesday, Oct. 25, the Houston County Coroner’s Office told McClatchy News. Pate was working with another man to hook two empty trailers together when a tractor rolled backwards, pinning him between the tractor and trailer.

Pate, 68, died as a result of the injuries he sustained.

It is unclear whether the tractor was left in reverse or was knocked backwards, the coroner’s office said.

The mill owner “was a friend, supporter and a confidant,” one user wrote in an Oct. 25 Facebook post.

“I am beyond heartbroken and I have no words to describe this and I think I never will, this pain is unreal,” his daughter Amanda Lauren Pate wrote in a post.

Pate celebrated his birthday on Oct. 5.

“Happy Birthday to the best dad and papa. Jake and I love you so much,” his daughter posted on Facebook.

Pate’s family kept the mill open Wednesday, saying it is “what he would have wanted,” according to his daughter’s Facebook post.

Ashford is about 85 miles northwest of Tallahassee, Florida.
