Man holding gun greets cops, tells them wife is dying inside house, CA police say
When officers arrived at a Gilroy home shortly after 9:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 5, to a call for medical aid, they found a 72-year-old man standing in the doorway with a handgun pointed at them, California authorities said.
The man, Steve Rabena, “fled back into the house” on Glenview Drive as officers got into position, the Gilroy Police Department said in a Thursday, Oct. 6, Facebook post.
He emerged for a moment to say “his wife was dying inside the house,” the post said.
“Officers were able to detain Rabena with the use of a K9 as he challenged the officers to ‘shoot’ him,” the post said.
After Rabena was arrested, officers turned their attention to his 82-year-old wife who had “life-threatening injuries,” police said.
The woman was taken to the hospital “but is expected to survive,” police said.
Police said they found a handgun inside the home, adding that “it is believed that a blunt force object” was used to injure the woman.
Rabena was booked into jail on multiple charges, including attempted murder and domestic violence, according to police.
Gilroy is about 85 miles southeast of San Francisco.
