21-year-old dies after another driver crosses into oncoming traffic, NC cops say
A pickup truck crossed a median before a crash that killed another North Carolina driver, officials said.
The 21-year-old woman was driving south on U.S. Highway 29 when, police said, a pickup truck that had been going north veered into oncoming traffic and hit her car. The woman — identified as Sunshine Nichole Williams — died in the crash.
The crash also left two people hurt and closed the highway for several hours on Saturday, Sept. 17, according to the High Point Police Department.
Now, the surviving pickup truck driver could face charges in the case, officers said.
The man was driving a Chevy Silverado pickup truck on the highway when he “ran off the roadway to the left and then overcorrected,” police said. That’s when he reportedly lost control of the truck, which careened across a “grass median, overturned, and struck” Williams’ car.
The Silverado “came to rest upside down on the guard rail,” and the driver had to be extricated, according to police.
The pickup truck driver and Williams’ passenger both had “serious but non-life-threatening injuries” after the crash. They were taken to the hospital.
Williams died at the scene. She was from Lexington, a town roughly 20 miles southwest of High Point.
“US 29 was completely shut down during this investigation between Interstate 74 and Baker Rd,” officials wrote in their release. “The highway was closed for approximately six (6) hours.”
An investigation was ongoing as of Sept. 18, and police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 336-889-4000. People can also submit tips using the P3 smartphone application.
